Social Worker
In New York State, there are two professional licenses for social workers, with different qualifications:  Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Both may provide clinical services such as, diagnosis of mental, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and addictive disorders, the development of treatment plans, and theprovision of psychotherapy, but an LMSW may provide these clinical services only under supervision of an LCSW, licensed psychologist or psychiatrist.  Both have earned a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree from a graduate school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and passed a national licensing exam. The Licensed Clinical Social Worker has an additional three years of post-degree supervised experience in clinical social work and has passed a clinical licensing examination.

Psychologist
A psychologist is a health care professional who diagnoses and treats mental, nervous, emotional, and behavioral disorders.  Clinical psychologists complete 4 to 6 years post-Bachelors training which includes courswork and 2 to 3 years of supervised clinical experience, a certain amount of personal psychotherapy, and the completion of a dissertation .  Psychologists with doctoral degrees with the letters Ph.D., Psy.D., and Ed.D. all have met the same educational requirements.   In addition, New York psychologists have completed two years of supervised experience, including one year after the doctoral degree and have passed a national licensing exam.

Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are physicians and one of the few professionals in the mental health industry who specialize and are certified in treating mental illness using medications.  They evaluate and provide care for patients who have psychiatric disorders, mental conditions, and substance abuse problems have a greater focus on psychiatric diagnosis, including the differential diagnosis of medical disorders with psychiatric symptoms and on medication treatment for psychiatric disorders.  Psychiatrists may or may not also be "talk" therapists.  After completing a Bachelors degree, a psychiatrist must then apply to and attend 4 years of medical school in order to earn their MD or DO.  Following this, the individual must practice as a psychiatric resident for another four years. After completing their training, psychiatrists take written and then oral board examinations.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor
Licensed Mental Health Counselors provide clinical services such as the diagnosis of mental, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and addictive disorders, the development of treatment plans, and the provision of psychotherapy.  An individual must complete a master's or doctoral degree in counseling. In addition, completion of a supervised experience of at least 3,000 clock hours providing mental health counseling after completion of the master's degree program is required for licensure.

Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Mental Health Nurse Practitioners evaluate and provide care for patients who have psychiatric disorders, mental conditions, and substance abuse problems. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, assess the psychosocial and physical state of their patients, create treatment plans, and continually manage their care.   Mental Health Nurse Practitioners have a greater focus on psychiatric diagnosis, including the differential diagnosis of medical disorders with psychiatric symptoms and on medication treatment for psychiatric disorders.  After earning the Bachelor's degree and passing the test for licensure as a registered nurse (the NCLEX-RN), the individual must complete a Masters Degree in advanced nursing education which includes at least 600 clinical hours.
